I had a 4th Gen basic Kindle, it lasted for about 10 years. I used it everyday and it was still going strong, but the case broke and I couldn't find a decent one and it had a blemish near the screen, so I sold it on eBay and bought the 10th Gen basic white (no fingerprints) which I love, apart from the fact that you can't disable the "progress in book" feature permanently!
I’ve had my paperwhite since 2012 and have used it pretty heavily and books still automatically download when I purchase. That being said I am really looking into upgrading to the newest paperwhite but haven’t quite made the decision yet since there is nothing wrong with mine. I had to remove the rubber coating on the back because it got sticky and my leather case disintegrated before my eyes.
I use a kobo clara HD and a Sony PRS 505 from 2007. They are more flexible then the kindle. Highly recommended.
You may be misunderstanding what not supported means. You can still use and download books to your old unsupported Kindle. Unsupported only means there will be no more software updates. I have a old generation 5, unsupported, and it still works just like it always has. I

I‘m obsessed with my kindle. I just switched over from a Kobo that I bought in 2016. I think e-readers last a long time in general. My old one worked fine but I felt like the battery life wasn‘t as long as it used to be and I‘m about to be traveling for 6 months straight. My kindle a has way better battery life and is smaller. Plus I loveeee Kindle Unlimited
I live in a poor country in the Middle East. I always wanted a Kindle, but the price is insane+ shipment, so I gave up. Suddenly, I found a store that sell them dirt cheap, about 4$ for all the old unsupported models. Apparently, most Americans gave up their old Kindles because of this new policy, and they were sold and shipped to poor countries. Don't know how to feel about it, as it is annoying not to be able to connect to Amazon to download books (highly doubt they would connect in my region anyway). But thanks to that move, I own a full functioning Kindle for only 4$.
I recently purchased a newer kindle and opted to buy the Kindle Basic 2022 version compared to the Paperwhite. Considering the rumors about a "Color" varient, I figured I'd save some cash. Enjoying the tiny form factor and able to have all my books on the go! The e-ink screen feels so much better on my eyes vs using my phone or tablet to read, although I do also prefer regular books more 😂

All that happend was that Verizon discontinued 3g so your old Kindle could no longer go into the Kindle store on your Kindle. Thats all. You can still use wifi and buy books from Amazon on your phone. I just bought 2 this morning and before I blinked they were on my Kindle. I dont have to do anything. My Kindle is a 4th generation that my husband gave me for our anniversary in 2011. Its just the Kindle store on your Kindle.

I use a galaxy tab a7, get them brand new new 130, do more than just read but it has the kindle app on.
I source my books from other places than amazon, so I was happy with my kindle keyboard… but it won't hold a charge (not an issue with the battery but the kindle) so I bought a 7th gen paperwhite for 40 bucks. I absolutely love it. Maybe I'll get an oasis one day cause I read for 5+ hours a day

Hello from Montana. 🙂 I have an older Kindle as well. For the last couple of years I've just been downloading ebooks to my phone then emailing them to my Kindle email address (email address found under "devices" in "account settings" in the Amazon app). The book is then instantly available on my Kindle. Typically for a lot less money or even free sometimes. Lately I've been downloading epub format. Works like a charm. Just thought I'd let you know that you can get books this way (if you didn't already know).
Hi Sandra, I have a few kindle fires but read on an oasis. I love them all. I get really annoyed with Amazon at times when they keep doing updates and then things change so you have to get used to the new way. I used to be able to write a review on my Oasis and put books in the cloud so they would go off my screen but it won't do this now. Well I haven't found a way to do it, if anybody can help me I'd be very much obliged. Also if I try and do a review on my fire, if I have bought the book I can but if I have borrowed it I can't. When I try to do it I can fill the first part in but when I go down to write my review the text covers that part up so I can't see what I am writing
I have a 4th generation that I bought in 2012 and I am still able to download the books I buy. I can't actually shop from the Kindle any more, but I can buy them on the website and send them to the Kindle by wifi. So I am able to keep using it. The 4th generation has page turn buttons on both sides which I really like, so I'm gald I can still use it.

If you have some gripes with Kindle, try being a Canadian. All current (brand new) Canadian Kindles have the Bluetooth disabled, making it impossible to experience audio books of any kind, even Audible. And to make matters even worse, content from local libraries through Libby is also not available. I find that I’m using my Kobo more than my Kindle, as it has Bluetooth and links to my library with Libby.
It's always so disappointing when they stop supporting something that's still fully functional! I hope you wind up enjoying your new Kindle, though.
