  2. 3 to 1 Russian losses is the way we are loosing Putinists’ war! Calculate the populations and mismatch. Parity in weaponry is the loss of Ukraine. Thanks to USA and NATO help and restrictions, Ukraine will die fighting for freedom, with weapons in their hands and a hope … My respect and compassion to this brave nation, not many left like them anywhere in the world, in Israel and it’s all.

  3. Thanks prof. There is a Reuters report today which might be important for the EU and Hungary. The report is that Hungary is relaxing travel and visa conditions for Russian citizens. It seems to me that would have the effect of completely undermining any restrictions by other EU States, especially as Hungary is in the Schengen zone of free movement. See https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/hungary-visa-move-stokes-eu-fears-russian-espionage-letter-shows-2024-07-30/ and https://schengen.news/russian-visitors-prefer-eu-destinations-for-this-summer-season-as-demand-increased-to-30/

  4. So you said, if you're writing into combat on a motorcycle, you're not gonna last very long. What makes you save this?Is this given your long history of combat experience? Please let us know in the common , thank you

  5. Putin isn’t going to listen to anything Trump says Putin wanted Biden as president plus Russia won’t negotiate from a position of power Ukraine is trying to ceasefire from a position of weakness that’s not a good idea especially against Putin Ukraine needs to push Russia back to borders then negotiate … slava Ukraine 🇺🇦

  6. Attrition is becoming a thing for Russia. We’ve long known of an almost endless supply of soldiers (trained or otherwise), but we’re now starting to hear about upcoming shortages of the different configurations of personnel carriers. Satellite photos show few remaining, and even the tanks are beginning to be cannibalized. Bad news for Putin.

  7. Putin has a pool of more than 20 million men of military age, even if all casualties reported were KIA, he would still have 40(!) times that manpower to continue. Yeah, I know … effectively he can only put up 4-8 times that number on to the front line or else the lights go out in Russia and the supply will collapse. This kind of suicidal warfare is what the Russians do, that's how they always fought their wars and there are simply not enough Ukrainians to counter that. The loss of a competent fighter hits Ukraine 3 times as hard as it hits Russia losing one. Ukraine needs to MOVE to put actual pressure on them, this can't be won "shooting gallery" style. I said this over a year ago, the best way to put actual pressure on Putin is to move towards Moscow. They've tried that in a "light" version with the "Russian" volunteers, but given that no songs were sung one can assume it ended in tears. Where are those damn F-16s and why will there be only 6 this year?! NATO et al is letting the Ukrainians down, it breaks my heart.

  8. I know Ukraine is doing the best they can, but they are fighting the wrong war. Trying to beat Russia at their own game of attrition is a losing game. If the Ukrainians cannot come out of their trenches and fight and maneuver, they should seek peace.

  9. Howdy Professor Gerdes, sometime back I came across a russian produced series on Netflix about AI robots created before the invasion (2019 I think). I lost interest in it so haven’t watched it all, but the relevance to your post is that it seemed that russian society was steeped in a violence that glorifies (?) the worst of humanity, kind of like fighting cartoon characters, the glory of the tough guy. Reminiscent of one of our presidential candidates.

  10. Training Ukrainian pilots became a serious problem because they started with experienced SU 34 guys with years of combat experience and they're very good at simply flying the jet. That's not the problem, he problem is they learned under Soviet tactics and no matter how hard they try, their instincts or muscle memory if you will, kicks in and they fail in learning NATO tactics. I've read they've moved to training new pilots with little flying experience but that takes a lot longer.

The language is a big problem as well. Not only does a trainee need to have the aptitude for it he needs to be bilingual. The F 16 is very complex meaning they need to be proficient in English. I'm sure you've seen lots of military aviation type movies where all the fighter pilot jargon is being used. They need to understand that on an instinctual level because things happen fast up there. Given the time sure, the Ukrainians will develop their own training in their own language using Western jets but we're talking 4-5 years at a minimum.

  11. Russia traded space for time and enemy casualties as part of a winning strategy against Napoleon and the Germans in WW2.

Now the same strategy is being used used against them.

  12. America is helping Russia but trying to make it look as though it is helping Ukraine
There is no other reason for the drip drip supply and restrictions applied.
The Ruskies will never use nukes
Both India and China have told them not to.
American money wants to get back to normal business so nukes is the excuse

  13. True, allies are not 'saying anything' about daily Russian war crimes. But actions speak louder than words. And the Europeans are actively supporting Ukraine financially and militarily. In the long term, they are able to divert interest on Russian deposits be given over to Ukraine. Automatic support is so cool. But yes, they could do both. I think a stream of money will be important in a Trump presidency if that happens. Thanks for your update, and Slava Ukraini!

  14. The usefulness of the bikes is high mobility – but not the kind of clunkers I have seen them riding in the video releases. Those poor fools are going offroad on street bikes mainly

  15. If there is talk of 2 settlements, you should consider the following. They are settlements in which 60-300 people lived. Possibly 1 dozen buildings that were destroyed by the time the Russian soldiers reached them so far that they could hardly be recognized as such.

  16. As I have said before NATO does not really want Ukraine to win this war. It is in their strategic interest to increase the military and economic bleeding of the Russian Nation for as long as possible. I do not agree with this policy but it is the way the cold war was won so as usual NATO is fighting the last conflict and not the current one.

  17. Thank you for stating bluntly just how poor the US effort has been to equip Ukraine with F16s and similar. We help only enough to prevent outright defeat, and by doing so, prevent Ukraine from pressing Russia back to the 2014 borders.

  18. Tactical advances disregarding the casualty rate may result in strategic advantage if steady in an attritional conflict like this one. The Russians fight the Russian way and Ukraine will be overwhelmed unless supplied by the Western countries with the proper means to nullify the Russian advantage in mass. A few F16s, outdated armor and insufficient ammo are not going to do the trick.

  19. Yes, the Russians are saving drones.

The following will most likely take place and why.
    1. The drones will be used against a relative narrow length along the line of contact.
    2. The US presidential candidates have signaled more aid to the UA.
    3. A "hail Mary" approach is a play on Suvorov's strategy. This is no time left to probe, find a weak spot and pour through. Now, it is just pick a spot and go.
    4. At this time, Russia has the UA reserves fixed in place and in support of the northern fighting.

  20. Have you heard about the t90s heading to St Petersburg, assuming on the way to Ukraine…are the 4 tanks a day T90s or all tanks….. concerned that t90s can still be produced, electronics coming from
somewhere unless more washing machines were stollen than was first reported??? Will be interesting when a new tank is captured to see the components and date stamps

  21. Good morning Professor,
One thing that seems to be ignored when people say the aid is too slow. That is the effect that Russian countermeasures have had on the more advanced weapons Ukraine received. Most GPS guided weapons are ineffective now. That caused a ripple effect throughout the arms industry. From a world view this has caused the cancellation of a number of programs. It makes a large number of NATO weapons ineffective. Requiring a huge amount of funding to develop alternative technology. Unless there are multiple paths of counter technology the updated weapons will not be given. That is just the way it will be. Ukraine is only 1 of the many points of conflict in the world. Additional ones will become more active in the future. We have to be ready.
