Sudden medical emergency costs Alberta family nearly $100K while on vacation
An Okotoks, Alta., woman hopes her travellers’ insurance covers 80 per cent of her unexpected costs after suffering a medical emergency while she and her son were on vacation this past July in Japan.
They say with the cost of the original trip, along with cancellations, rebooking and the loss of wage, the total comes out to just shy of $100,000.
Craig Momney reports.

Needed medical on holiday in USA Alberta health pays what the treatment would have cost in Alberta. It’s very little I found out. My work insurance covered the remainder.
She HAD insurance! The problem is that they asked for money upfront.
Disney is an evil company.
If you can afford to travel, you can afford to be proactive. Why is this a news story?
Who travels without travel insurance 😢that’s a hard earned lesson ❤
U went to america. Foolish move!
Lucky for me my insurance covers any amount as it's built into my job ^.^
Wow you people are so ignorant. She has travel insurance. It's in the statement under the title.
I had 2 incidents while travelling in Mexico a few years ago. First a gash from breaking a wine glass while washing, then kidney stones 4 days before coming home. We had insurance but that took quite awhile for them to contact them so we had to credit card up. $17,000 hold on our card. Fortunately we had $40k limit on this card. They still held me hostage though until the insurance people finally confirmed we had coverage!! It was stressful for my husband. But now we are looking to increase that card to 50k just in case.
I was in a car accident in mexico last year, fully insured.. im now claiming bankruptcy 🙂
This is news? Buy health insurance when u travel, it's simple! Omg, people.can be so dumb
Maybe get insurance
There is no end to stupidity…….
Brother… who doesn't travel abroad without insurance? Lol. It's the most basic necessity you need when you plan a trip.
You have to pay then get reimbursed
I am not sure why this is news worthy, other than hoping others would pay for their bill. Stupid is as stupid does.
Thoughts are free.
Lucky they were in Japan and not the USA! Only 40k including travel expenses is a steal for a first world country like Japan!
They had travelers insurance right?…
This headline appears in the news every year. Not sure why people are shocked
An adult person has Mikey Mouse toys all over her bedroom 😂😂😂😂😂
Thought alberta wanted to Americans , this will be the price to give birth also no Maternity leave
Where they jabbed? Those who were better be looking over their shoulder for the rest of their life.
seriously this is a presentable story only idiots don't get insurance YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN
No difference from someone travelling to Canada. The cost of her medical care in Canada is way more expensive. MRI is 3000 here. It’s only 600 in the US.
People will spend thousands on travel and cheap out on insurance to protect them. Just pay the money…for the love of common sense
Always have insurance when you leave Canada 😎
Sell you house!
why is this on the news?
if a visitor in Canada, without insurance, has to get surgery, and ICU, they will be charged just as much.
She even says she will get most of her money back through her work insurance…
what this garbage reporting?
no travel insurance. should know better. sorry
If you cant afford the travel insurance you shouldn't go on the trip
Oh my g
Japan has socialized medicine, its disappointing that they didn't cover the charges
It appears this family could endure the cost, but let this be a lesson to the rest of us who can not afford to go without travel insurance. So many of us would be in a terrible mess.
People always bash developing countries when having to pay a hefty sum because of a medical emergency while vacationing. This poor family was in one of the most developed countries in the world, meaning it could happen anywhere in the world. That said, I feel really sorry for what happened to them. Thank God everything worked out at the end. Travel insurance or some kind of overseas coverage should be a must for every traveler. 😖😓
Fool. How is that making the news?
Freaky kid
Even with travel insurance, they may not cover expenses. Also the Canadian Healthcare may not, either.
Oh boo hoo! I suppose you want the taxpayer to pay the difference!
She had travel insurance. the first line in the description indicate she’s hoping that her insurance will cover 80% of her expenses. Not sure why this was a news story
Why, why, would anyone travel abroad without insurance. Crazy!
Never without travel insurance
It's expensive but it's part of the cost of travel
This person is very lucky to be alive
that is a very reasonable fee for such a hospital stay and complex surgery actually. In the US the bill could easily reach 7 figures for that. Get the insurace, understand it and be sure it fits your situation properly.
