Travel Insurance Tips: 7 Things to Know Before You Buy

Should you insure your next trip? Do you really need travel insurance? These are questions I’ve been getting more often due to the recent pandemic and I will take some time in this video to answer those questions about travel insurance. The reason to buy travel insurance can be simply put: Travel Insurance minimizes the financial risks associated with travel.

Does it make sense for you?
For some people it makes financial sense. Others it doesn’t.
How willing are you to take risks? How much if peace of mind worth for you?
If your potential loss is a few hundred dollars in airfare, travel insurance is probably not worth the cost or aggravation. On the other hand, a once-in-a-lifetime $20,000 vacation is worth protecting.

Types of Travel Insurance:
Trip cancellation: Refund if you cancel due to a covered reason. CORONAVIRUS TYPICALLY ISN’T ONE.
Trip interruption: Refund for the rest of your trip if you have to return home
Trip delay: Refund for expenses due to a delay. Usually has to be 6 to 12 hours.
Medical: Emergency medical expenses on the trip. Optional: Medical Transport
Death/Dismemberment:
Baggage: Lost, Stolen, Damaged, Delay
Rental Car
Change Fees
=== Less common types:
Political evacuation: Transport to the nearest safe place
Comprehensive insurance” covers all of the above (plus expenses incurred if your trip is delayed, if you miss your flight, or if your tour company changes your itinerary).
Reimbursement only — you pay first… then submit some paperwork to get your money back.

  • “Terrible experience with General Travel Insurance. They don’t deliver on anything they promise. For your lost luggage claims, they ask you to contact your homeowner’s insurance first and for medical issues, they refer you to your healthcare provider first. Why bother paying for travel insurance if they won’t take responsibility? Complete waste of money with this company ,stay away!”

  • Hopefully you can answer this question and make some recommendations.

    Back story.
I am an American Living and working in Singapore.

    I have a business trip planned july-June

My company has a 3rd party who handles our travel and insurance .

However I am flying to the U.S. for vacation and then traveling directly to Europe for business.

My company was able to purchases and schedule my flights via our 3rd party travel company. However they were not able to purchase travel insurance because I am not leaving from Singapore…

My boss asked me to set up travel insurance on my own because it “has to be purchased from the country you are leaving from.”

All fees will be reimbursed so price is not my biggest factor.

Just curious if you have recommendation on who and where to go ?

  • Dont get scammed. When you buy auto insurance, it starts on the day of the month you pay for it. That means if you buy it on the 24th. The next months bill is due on the 24th of the next month. That continuse as long as you have the policy. Here's where their scam comes in. If you have Travelers insurance, and decide to go with another company because Travelers continually rais their rates. So your all st up with the new insurance provider and you call Travelers insurance and cancel your policy on the 23 of the month, a day before your new monthe begins. They will bill you for the following month, even though you cancelled the policy. They will give uou some laim brain excuse. Its pretty simple you pay at the beginning and cancel at the end. Unless you want to be a victim of Travelers insurance, Dont buy it in the first place. I just got a policy with another agency for eighty five dollars less with more coverage.

  • Thank you for your informative video. I recently went on an Antartica cruise and the trip was interrupted or delayed because of weather conditions (we had to wait until a storm passed before our charter flight would fly and had a 1 day delay and then we had to return half a day early in order to avoid a storm. I thought our credit card's trip interruption policy would cover it and filed a claim. My claim was denied because the trip interruption was due to "weather" and weather was not one of the allowed reasons they covered. Does the Chase Saphire card you mentioned cover this? Or what do you recommend – we are wanting to do a North Pole expedition cruise.and thinking of travel insurance.

  • What is the timing practice for purchasing your insurance? Like how much time do you have before your actual trip before you have to buy the insurance?

  • If anyone has claimed against their travel insurance and the claim was dealt with quickly and efficiently then please let us all know as it would seem claim handlers at the moment are incompetent, drag the claims out over months and don't answer the phone or reply to emails.

Before buying travel insurance always read the reviews for the company claim handlers not the brokers, you will be shocked.

  • Thanks for the info. Just be more mindful in the future when using words like third world, better country and civilized loosely. Some people might feel offended by the use of those terms.

  • We’re going to Mexico and I’m afraid that we won’t get there with all the airline issues. Any suggestions on what insurance we should get? Want something to cover our airline tickets and the cost of our resort any input would be greatly appreciated. I don’t don’t want to loose out on what we wait for our vacation

  • HI, that was a very helpful, and well-delivered informative video. If you ever do another one, I think the one thing most viewers have in common is we have health insurance already, so I'd have liked to hear how the biggies: Blue Cross/Shield, Kaiser, etc, and Medicare treat medical care needed overseas, if at all. And a tech question. Your sound was very good but I don't see a lav mic, which is the only mic mentioned in your description. What kind of directional mic do you use for shoots like this when you are 3 feet or so from the camera. Thanks and best wishes.
